Pornography is readily available and easily accessible to almost anyone nowadays and it poses a real problem to many. This film and the connected blog posts are here as a resource for anyone in need of help or further information.

[A note from Andy]
So why have I made this film? Well the reasoning is probably threefold, as a challenge, a witness and an encouragement.

A challenge
Firstly it is a challenge to myself. It is a test as to whether God really comes above and before everything else in this world. Jesus calls us to truly die to ourselves in order to follow Him and every day I claim to believe that. But do I really? It’s so easy to say that God is in charge, but actually to spend your entire life being shaped by family, friends and culture. To tell the world this story about myself rather than one that makes me look good is an attempt to put God’s glory and fame far above my own. I don’t want to look good from this film; I want Him to look good. That’s the first challenge.

The second challenge is to any Christians watching the film who are currently in the habit of watching porn, or even allowing their thoughts to drift towards the woman with the short skirt or the man with his top off etc… I want this to be a genuine challenge to people who have given the hearts, minds and souls to God but are in reality giving more attention to sensuality. It’s not a witch-hunt, it’s a real life outworking of Jesus’ clear and explicit teaching on what we do with our eyes and our hearts. Culture would like to excuse you of everything that ‘doesn’t harm anyone’, but God makes it clear that whether it’s done in the heart or with the hands, it’s still violating His perfect standard. And to be looking lustfully at someone we’re not committed to in marriage is totally crossing that line.

A witness
As I said above, this isn’t a witch-hunt because there would be something slightly wrong (and ironic) with a witch pointing their gnarled finger at other witches! I actually believe that someone who has never gone through this situation but speaks from the Bible has infinitely more authority than someone who has the experience but no scriptural backing. However I’m hoping in this case that the two will come together and my personal story alongside God’s divine wisdom might touch some hearts deeply. God’s desire for His church has always been a remarkable balancing act of witness through weakness combined with witness through holiness. A common misconception is that Christians need to pretend they’ve got it all together, floating on clouds with no real struggles in life. This fallacy is as harmful as the sin that’s being hidden! Paul doesn’t refer to his old self as ‘the worst sinner’ (1 Tim. 1:15) for no reason; he wants us to see that without God we are all totally hopeless. But he then also tells us to follow his example and live a life that is holy and pleasing to God (1 Corinthians 11:1). I want this video to work in the same way, as a double-edged sword, to point out that without God I am just as much a sinner as the next person, but with Him I have received a calling of sainthood.

An encouragement
I would have totally missed the point if this third point weren’t here, because I really want these videos to change lives. The incredible thing about Jesus is that He actually picks you up out of your mess. Unlike every other ‘god’ or self-help scheme, He doesn’t leave you deluded, shamed or naïvely optimistic. The biggest realisation any Christian can make is to see that the gospel truly does bring an answer to every situation in life. And more than anything I want that to be what rings in everyone’s ears after watching my story; that God’s grace brings unquenchable hope and total redemption. So often we don’t bother climbing the mountain because the top looks too far away. But no one is expected to do it all in one go, but rather step by step. Sometimes God does seem to teleport people up the mountain without any work of their own (Darrell Tunningley etc…), but usually He’ll let us put the hard yards in and will teach us a huge amount along the way. What I want to encourage is for people to have the faith it takes to make the first move in the right direction and to believe that with God’s support and guidance they will complete the climb.

I hope those three points have given a clear framework of why I felt this video should be made. I am conscious that some people may see all of this as a bit over the top and might believe that porn isn’t really a problem for anyone as long as it’s legal. The next article will be a reflection on the realities of our sex obsessed culture and will hopefully give those people something to think about. However far more than that, if you are reading this and wouldn’t call Jesus your saviour and lord then my priority is not that you would change your behaviour at all. If you haven’t put your faith in Jesus Christ then there is a much bigger problem than being free of porn; there is problem of eternal life. If that’s you then I’d love you to read this and also to come explore more of who Jesus really is with us at Alpha or on Sundays.
