The God Who Takes New Ground – Chapel’s Church Plant
‘After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give them – to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your feet, as I promised Moses.”’
All of our earthly lives have a record written down somewhere, that only God knows in full. Its account finishes when the Lord takes us home. Meanwhile, both God and his people are to be continuously on the move in transforming territory for Jesus – in terms of our family, our church, day jobs, spiritual maturity, evangelistic impact, and influence on people and places God has assigned to us. We dare not remain static when God promises us advance and new gains for his honour, and our earthly destiny.
One of the greatest uses of our lives and abilities, is take new ground for God in places that need him and his people, and where hope has been rare to non-existent. Church planting is by far the best way to do this. It’s God’s way of extending the franchise of God’s rule and blessing to people who’ve rarely experienced it in full. For all of our lives God has been preparing us for something: Gospel impact, redemptive lift, and readiness to give our all to plant and grow vibrant churches, one of the greatest needs of our capital and nation.
It was the courageous and long-term Chinese underground church leader Watchman Nee, who once affirmed the truth that second only to the believer catching an unshakeable vision of the greatness of Jesus, is that very same believer receiving a God-given vision of the greatness of the Church of Jesus. Fortunate indeed, are those favoured Christians who’ve seen the vitality, impact, necessity, and honour of being called to start and build a church that shatters secular disillusionment with drab, deadly, and dire churches – and introduces them to Jesus’ true Church – full of life, truth, and biblical authenticity – which is ‘The hope of the world!’
We are now nearing our final countdown to the launch of a brand new church-plant across the Thames in the South Bank area this coming Autumn. Andrew Haslam has been praying, planning, and picking a team of pioneers, for the dedicated and enthusiastic core of men and women who will break new ground for the gospel across the river. They will all truly represent us and what we believe and practice, since they have caught the best of what Jesus has shown us and taught us over many years – things that have shaped all of our lives through God’s Word and Spirit – so that many others can discover and benefit from them also.
Let us all claim God’s ancient promise to Joshua, which is also his promise to us through Jesus, ‘I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised to Moses.’
