In Autumn 2016 we launched an afternoon training and discipleship academy (replacing the evening service) to equip our people, “to grow in Christ and impact every place we tread” (outworking our mission to “make disciples”). We are committed to growing strong disciples as well as growing in numbers.
Our desire is “to present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:8). This demands doing more than Sunday services and Life Groups. We need another equipping vehicle to more thoroughly teach people how to read the Bible, pray, breakthrough stronghold sin issues, identify and develop spiritual gifts (e.g. prophecy), share the gospel, and grow in leadership. Furthermore, people need to be taught in a way that maximises their learning. Therefore there will be lots of space for interaction, dialogue and discussion, (especially important for our millennials!).
We started with just one training track, the recently updated and condensed Freedom in Christ course, Disciple. Following this successful first term, further tracks will be added, such as Growing in the Prophetic, Spiritual Disciplines, Evangelism (and Apologetics), Leadership, Marriage and Parenting. Some will be ongoing, others repeated bi-termly or yearly.
When will this happen?
For the Autumn/Winter 2017 term, the details are as follows:
Time: 2.30-4pm (after lunch).
1/ Disciple Course – Main Hall starting on the 8th Oct for 7 weeks
2/ CAP Money Course – Small Hall starting on the 8th Oct for 3 weeks
3/ Belonging Course – Small Hall starting on the 5th Nov for 3 weeks
Please sign up for these courses on The City or email: [email protected]
About the Academy
The Academy isn’t a replacement service, and is mainly intended to strengthen discipleship. We believe it will brilliantly complement our Sunday mornings and Life Groups. Regular attenders of our church are invited to sign up to tracks on Sundays and online through our App.
Training Tracks This Term:
8th October – 19th November
You can find out more about the Disciple course via this video:
Freedom in Christ is an outstanding and highly respected discipleship course. The shorter Disciple Course that we’ll be using has been excellently updated to reach a more contemporary audience. It will be interactive, engaging, full of discussion time and no doubt life changing. Therefore we believe the material will be of immense value for every Christian, whether baby or prehistoric in their faith. We hope the majority of our church will take part in the Autumn term.
It will be taught by a variety of our own people, who will be presenting the material, making it their own, and others will lead breakout groups, discussions and prayer responses. Presenters will draw out the essential and best parts of the material and interweave it with their personal testimonies whilst sticking to the outlines provided.
8th, 15th and 22nd October
The CAP Money Course is a free course to help people manage their money better and learn to budget, save and spend well.
The CAP Money Course features DVD presentations by John Kirkby, the Founder and International Director of CAP. CAP trains volunteers from local churches to be CAP Money Coaches, who will then work through individual budgets with delegates.
“The welcome that I received at the first meeting of the CAP Money Course was so very friendly and put me at my ease straight away. Since attending the course, my credit card has become redundant. I have used the three account philosophy to great effect. I will be starting the new decade with no money owing on my credits cards and I could not be in a better position. I owe it all to the simple but very effective CAP Money Course.” Andrea Singleton
“I tried to commit suicide all thanks to my stupidity with money, but we were kept going by the prayers and love of friends. We were put on the CAP Money Course and, for me especially, it changed my life.” Mandy Dixon
5th, 12th and 19th November
If you’ve been coming along to the Chapel for a few months or more and want to make it your ‘home church’, then the Belonging Course is for you.
Over 3 weeks, we’ll tell you all about our church and the things we hold as our core beliefs.
You’ll also get the chance to ask questions, and sign up to serve in our various ministries.
Other Training Tracks:
We’ve worked hard to create this course because we want every member of our church to be a witness to Jesus. This is an essential part of our Christian identity and calling in which we find great joy.
It’s why we’ve called the course iWitness.
I witness – learning to talk about what you’ve seen and experienced in God, not repeating what others have told you.
I witness – recognising that we each individually need to be involved in mission.
Eye witness – we’re following in the footsteps of the early church, the Bible itself is a collection of eye witness accounts.
Jesus put it like this in Acts 1:8 “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Each week we’ll look at different aspects of witnessing, building on the week before, with knowledge, skills and experience components. They’ll be short talks, group discussions, role plays and opportunities to put what you learn into practice in the week and out on the streets.
We’ve based our material primarily on leading evangelist J John’s The Natural Evangelism Course, but also top apologist Greg Koukl’s book Tactics, and the first-hand experience of gifted evangelists in our church, particularly our experienced Pilot Lights team.
The Beta group is for those who want to learn more about who Jesus is and what it means to follow him a powerful and practical way.
This group is an ideal way to continue on from the Alpha course, whether you have made a personal commitment to follow Christ or are still exploring what that might mean.
The group will gather together on Sunday afternoons for 4 weeks. It will be a little different to Alpha. We will begin by discussing relevant topics which tie into the theme of the Bible passages we will study together. Over the 4 weeks we’ll work through Paul’s letter to the Colossians and consider how the good news of Jesus transforms us and the world around us.
