Truth is better than fiction. Paul could have blasted the Corinthians with the seventh commandment: thou shalt not commit adultery. Stop visiting prostitutes! Or stop watching porn! But he doesn’t start by telling them how to live, but who they are.

This is what separates Christianity out from other belief systems. The moment you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead, he washes, sanctifies and justifies you. That’s why Paul says “that is what some of you were” past tense, Chapter 6, verse 11. You are now clean, whiter than snow in God’s sight. God in Christ, at the cross was covered in your filth. He was treated as a porn user. He was shamed and condemned in your place so you can go free.

In God’s sight the moment you believe you’re sexually pure, whether you feel like it or not. You must reckon this as true. Why? Because God says it!

Paul is saying, you’re body matters now and in eternity. You have the privilege of being Christ’s hands and feet, revealing what He’s like to the world. So don’t mess around with this rubbish. Be righteous! Your body is a dwelling place for God. He paid everything to free you from the power of sin, don’t live under it, as if it still owns you. Christ has set you free; use your freedom to serve Him.

You’re more precious to God than you know.

In many cultures around the world dowries are given, a bride price is paid, typically, but not always, by the husband to be, and his family, for his wife, whether money, goats, or cows.

A mobile phone app was even created in Nigeria, albeit as a joke, to calculate the marital value of a woman by pricing attributes such as her height, weight and cooking skills. Some examples of the app’s ‘pricing system’ were: women with legs shaped like Beyonce’s score more highly; women who can’t cook traditional food like pounded yam make a bargain and while a Masters Degree increases a woman’s ‘monetary value’, a PhD, apparently lowers it.

Having someone ‘price you up’ isn’t a pleasant prospect. But that’s what makes the idea of bride price so interesting, when it comes to Jesus, and his bride, you and me, the church.

How much are you worth? Whether you do porn or not, we are all dirty and defiled. No one would choose us for a bride, let alone pay a dowry, if they knew the whole truth about what we’ve each said, thought and done.

And yet, at the cross, we were “brought with a price” 1 Corinthians 6:20, Jesus paid THE price, he endured torture, giving His life to demonstrate His love for you – in spite of your sin.

Reckoning this true will melt your heart into an obedient shape. Every time you’re tempted, challenge yourself to see the greater love of Christ. His respect is worth more than a coerced naked women pretending to smile at you. Friendship with Him and the relationships He’s sovereign over are better than the empty intimacy a distant stranger can offer. His comfort is infinitely more reassuring because He’s in control of the circumstances stressing you out, and has the wisdom to help you through them. He knows what you’re going through better than anyone else because (a) He knows everything and (b) he became flesh and faced the stress of conflict and criticism, betrayal and beatings. He’s the One you really need.

Fill your mind up with how good God is and if you need to fantasise about something, fantasise about heaven. Think of superzied sinless pleasures in a world remade without sin, sickness, suffering and death. If you need help, read Randy Alcorn’s excellent book titled Heaven.
