A few years ago I had an intense pain just below my ear. Initially I thought it was ear ache but that checked out fine. Then I thought maybe it’s my jaw. A doctor agreed and said I would need surgery to realign it! I got a second opinion. I went to see an osteopath; they traced the problem all the way down my neck, through my back to my hips. A few adjustments, followed by a couple of weeks of exercises and stretches and the pain had gone.

Beating porn is a bit like that. You have to trace it back to the source. Porn is a symptom of a broken heart reaching out for wholeness, only it falls for the false promises of porn instead of pursuing God.

• To someone feeling inadequate or rejected, porn offers respect. “It made me feel excited and manly”, one guy said.
• To someone battling loneliness, or who’s afraid of intimacy, porn offers relationship; one that makes you feel like you’re in control.
• To someone facing hardship or failure, porn offers refuge – stress relief.

Do you know what the root of your porn problem is? Porn is lying to you. It’s like a dodgy politician making manifesto promises it cannot keep.

So how do you fight against it? Exposing the lies but also seeking the Truth. Fight against the transient moment of pleasure porn can bring with the eternal pleasures available in God. Fight pleasure with greater pleasure. God is bigger and better than porn.

Take some time today to think about what you go to porn for, the problem or pain beneath the surface. Dig it up at the roots. It means you have to get your hands dirty and go where you don’t want to but it will be worth it.
