PRAYER SHIELD
For many years successive ministers at Westminster Chapel have hungered for a mighty outpouring of the Spirit upon us. More recently many encouraging prophetic words have been given to us that indicate this is God's heart as well. We believe God wants us to take Him seriously in this, believe His word to us and call upon Him to make good His promises to us as we call upon him in faith and cheerful obedience to His calling upon our lives together as a church.
What?
In response, we have developed a new prayer initiative - the Westminster Chapel 'Prayer Shield' - borrowing from a military term that denotes both offensive and defensive measures designed to protect a nation and throw back her enemies. Prayer Shield will be a one year commitment to pray regularly for Westminster Chapel along the lines of these five prayer points:
The Past:
- Thank God for over 160 years of perseverance, preservation, and provision in Westminster Chapel
(1 Chron 16:8, Eph 5:20, Phil 4:6, Col 3:17, 1 Thess 5:18).
The Present:
- For greater anointing, wisdom, power and protection for Greg and the Leadership Team
(Eph 6:19, 2 Thess 3:1). - For the blessing, success and growth of CityLifeGroups
(John 13:35, Acts 2:46-47). - For the full realisation of our Mission (Matt 10:1-42, 28:18-20), Vision (Prov 29:18, Acts 2:42-47),
Values (Acts 4:32-35, 5:12-16, Rom 12:1-8, 1 Cor 12:12-27).
The Future:
- That God will hasten the time of the fulfilment of prophetic words given to Westminster Chapel
(1 Kings 8:23-26, Hab 2:1-3, Hag 2:1-9).
Why?
God has kept and preserved the life and work of the congregation at Westminster Chapel for many years so it's appropriate that we begin with thanks for his ongoing goodness and blessings to us - God loves us to voice our gratitude.
Jesus has taught us to persist in prayer and not give up. One of the most effective ways of praying is to remind God of His promises. It's a little like a child saying to his father, 'But Daddy, you said so!' This is what faith is - believing God. God always keeps His promises as is evident in numerous Bible-passages, like Numbers 23:19: "God is not a man that he should lie, nor the son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?" Also 1 Kings 8:24: "You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it - as it is today."
How?
John Wesley once said, "God does nothing except in answer to prayer." E.M. Bounds wrote, "Only God can move mountains, but faith and prayer move God." This Prayer Shield is one way to develop appropriate persistence in prayer. God will only move when He is ready and the timing is right, but by participating in this initiative along with us you can show that you we want to join us in entreating God to equip and prepare us for the blessings we believe He has promised and we which long to experience. This simply demonstrates faith in ways that please God, for we are taking him at His word; He will honour that.
